Apple iphone: hidden things

by adam caitlin
The world's smallest Mac is about to get a lot bigger. Passionate developers have cracked the code to write true native applications for the iPhone, beginning a new era of true binary development for the ground-breaking handheld computer. There's only one problem: Apple wants to forbid these developers from doing what they do best. Yes, in the iPhone's topsy-turvy world, real software development is forbidden--what developers are supposed to do is put together Web "applications" that can be hit by the phone's Safari browser. Fortunately, programmers have been pretty ambitious there, too. Web "apps" may not have quite the power and punch of native applications, but they can keep you busy with simple games, let you access gigabytes of music and video, or add instant-messaging to a device that desperately needs it. One warning: using some of these apps tends to make your iPhone rather toasty warm and completely guts your battery life. If you're streaming a lot of content over Wi-Fi (say, through Glide or Seeqpod) expect to get no more than a few hours' use of your iPhone on a charge. As we scoped out our top iPhone apps, we kept in mind that we're PC Magazine . So almost everything in our list is Windows compatible. Here are our picks for the Top 10 iPhone Apps--or, in some cases, PC apps to go with your iPhone.

3G, 16GB iPhone for Europe in November?

Apple may launch its iPhone campaign in Europe with a 3G-capable iPhone with enhanced storage, according to what appears to be a leaked ad from T-Mobile Germany. The ad promises a version of the handset with support for 3G-level cellular Internet access using both the US-friendly HSDPA format and typically Europe-only UMTS, with theoretical download speeds reaching the format's full 3.6Mbps. It also suggests that the device will carry 16GB of memory, representing the first storage upgrade to the device since its launch in June. Visual Voicemail and the 2-megapixel camera would remain the same as for the US version.

The ad includes an error which references the device in one instance as an iPod, but otherwise appears to be consistent with T-Mobile's advertising and may reflect a desire to return to two-tier pricing for the iPhone after the drop to $399 for the 8GB model, if proven accurate. The 3G iPhone would sell for 499 Euros ($687) including a coupon for the iTunes Store, and would be available with phone plans that all offer unlimited data and vary only in terms of general calling minutes and SMS messages. An "L" plan would offer 200 minutes and 100 messages for 50 Euros ($69) per month; "XL" and "XXL" plans would jump to 300 and 400 minutes respectively for 60 Euros ($83) and 70 Euros ($96) per month with 150 and 200 messages each.

The provider itself hasn't officially confirmed its selection as Germany's exclusive carrier but has already been caught preparing support materials for the iPhone, in one case hosting images for the product on its own website.

T-Mobile's reported ad would also be the first to commit to a definitive release date for the iPhone outside of the US, slating the handset for a release with the carrier on November 12th. Apple has already promised a fourth-quarter release for the iPhone in Europe but has yet to formally announce a timetable for the launch. The California firm is expected to accompany the German introduction with an O2 version in the UK and an Orange version for France.

Apple made a great approach to iPhone worshipers outside of the USA!

Apple put on a special event yesterday to announce and introduce their range of new iPOD's. Except for the iPOD shuffle, it is just new colors that have been added. I'm sure most iPOD lovers and related business people are eager to know whether the iPOD Touch will be introduced during this event. They did introduce a beautiful slim iPhone without a telecom module inside, and name it iPOD Touch. Right, it's a 'new' product category from Apple, but its way similar to others. Haha?

I think Steve Jobs made a decision to focus the iPOD shuffle, Nano and Classic models on the USA market since iPhone has the same features as the iPOD Touch - even menu outlooks. I don't think this Touch will become a best seller as previous model iPODs. Their potential customers are having fun with iPhones already. Steve released the iPOD Touch to target customers outside of the USA who are waiting for the iPhone release as well as other new iPOD models. Releasing a new mobile phone with no previous sales history to those major mobile phone network providers is a very hard job and they have to deal with each market individually. Also, the current iPhone doesn't work on 3G networks, which most of Europe and Korean market are heading to, so they need to come up with something to solve two issues at the same time with the best item - and it is the iPOD Touch.

In Korea, the Apple iPOD didn't take more than 40% of the MP3P market share, compared to strong results among most of markets in the world. This is because Korea was the first country that released the MP3P and there were more than 50 manufacturers currently in Korea already, so this business was booming here. This meant there was very big competition going on with all Korean made MP3P, and all had strong Korean support. There was not a lot of room for Apple to get in, and also iTunes was not available until today. However, Apple came out with new iPODs, with a great outlook and feelings. Slowly, iPOD users in Korea started to be recognized as early adopters. Young and talented guys started to buy iPOD's to differentiate from others. (Yes, its very common device at overseas but wasn't in Korea due to a lack of features and services). Apple did a great job from 2006, and they are starting to lift market shares slowly from the bottom lines. They are really close to 10%e and this should be exceeded this after the new models are released.

Also, as the Korean mobile market is one of the most advanced markets in the international scene, Korean's were disappointed that the iPhone wasn't available for their market. Many hackers broke through the iPhone's sim-card security, which is meaningless seeing as the GSM network isn't available in Korea anyway. Some people instead use it as a PDA or PMP.?They would not be impressed with this, seeing as the new iPOD Touch has all the same features as the iPhone, but it is much cheaper.?The only benefit that these people had, was to be able to play with a new gadget a few weeks before anyone else.

iPOD Touch will pulling in all those iPhone and iPOD worshipers all over the world, plus Nano and Classic will hurt other MP3P manufacturers with their very low price ranges, which is a result of their strong buying power. Toshiba have also announced their new 1.8inch HDD with 80GB and 160GB capacities - just after the Apple announcement on the Classic. I don't think other manufacturers will have a chance to get stocks into the marketplace as the same date as Apple. Since Apple will take up many weeks or months of their whole production.

New iPOD line ups will be available in Korea from the middle of October to gain EMI test. Let's see how they are getting on with here in Korea. I'm still concerned as to why Apple didn't open their iTunes online stores in Korea and China markets, seeing as they have great benefit potential to Apple.

Can anyone try those new iPODs? I heard they have already arrived in Korea. Apple Korea's warehouse?Do I have to make a secret hidden deal with them to get my hands on one and play with it earlier? Haha

Apple tries to block custom ringtones for iPhone with an update

Apple tries to block custom ringtones for iPhone with an update

Apple just recently announced the capability of adding custom ringtones to the iPhone mobile phone.

However, the official method required the user to purchase the song from the iTunes which cost an additional 99 cents.

The company has now released an update for the iPhone which tried to block the third party tools enabling the users to upload custom ringtones on the iPhone.

Users confirmed that after installing the iTunes 7.4.1 update, earlier methods no longer worked.

However, the problem existed for a short while as custom solutions are already available to bypass that update to add free custom ringtones on the iPhone.

Ambrosia Software’s iToner is one of the several tools which have already been updated to work with the latest update to the iPhone.
